Champion Trees
Three Montpelier trees have been named state champions in their species category by the Virginia Big Tree Program, a cooperative including the Virginia Department of Forestry, the Virginia Forestry Association, and the Virginia Tech College of Natural Resources. The three award-winning trees—an English Oak (Common Oak), an Osmanthus (Holly Leaf), and a Spanish Fir—are all located on the southwest side of the Montpelier mansion. All three trees can be seen on the walk from the Visitor Center to the mansion.
The English Oak stands 65 feet tall with a circumference of 192 inches and an average crown spread of 76 feet, scoring 276 points. The Holly Leaf stands 33 feet talk with a circumference of 33 inches and an average crown spread of 23 feet, scoring 72 points. The Spanish Fir stands 50 feet tall with a circumference of 130 inches, and an average crown spread of 47 feet, scoring 192 points.
