Excavate: Archaeology Expedition
What is an Excavation Expedition?
Here at Montpelier Archaeology, we have a passion for working with the public to discover and preserve Madison’s historic landscape. We welcome you to step inside our active excavation sites and dig beside our professional archaeology staff. Along the way, you will learn how to identify 18th and 19th century artifacts and discover what happens to this material culture after it is excavated. Our programs also include several specialty lectures and tours that are not available to a typical Montpelier visitor, which will immerse you in the 18th, 19th, and 20th century history of the property. You will not just dig with us, you will learn with us.

For this special 250th season (2026) we are investigating the Revolutionary-War era blacksmith shop at Montpelier, immediately adjacent to Montpelier’s iconic Temple (built in 1811). This blacksmith shop was run by enslaved blacksmith Moses, who supervised several enslaved smiths. The scope of their work is revealed by ledger books dating back to the American Revolution, which lists over 250 customers from across the region and detail the thousands of items produced and repaired at the shop. Through the archaeology, we are attempting to locate the forges and gain a better understanding of the technology and items being produced at the shop. When you register for a program, we will send you additional information on the work we are doing.
Upcoming Programs
For the 2026 season, we are going to be conducting excavations at the 18th Century Blacksmith Shop. For the season, we have several unique programs including a home cooking program with Jerome Bias, a masonry program, and a blacksmithing expedition.

Program Format
Week-Long Programs
Most of the week-long programs begin at 8am on Monday and end at 4pm on Friday. With the typical excavation program, you will spend four whole days excavating our active archaeology site and an entire day with our archaeology field laboratory. You will also receive a special orientation lecture, three exclusive property tours, and access to parts of the property not open to visitors. The program fee includes a Welcoming Reception on Monday morning and a Farewell Reception and Graduation Ceremony Friday afternoon. In addition, participants will receive a Montpelier Welcome Bag, Montpelier Membership, a commemorative certificate, and a group photo. Participants are responsible for their own housing.
Important Note: Montpelier is a rural area and participants are expected to provide their own transportation. While you can catch an uber from the airport/train station to Montpelier, there are none that are reliably called in the area. We do not have the staffing to provide daily rides back and forth between lodging and the site.
Where will we be working?
During the 2026 Season, the Montpelier Archaeology Department is investigating an 18th-century Blacksmith Shop that was run by Moses, an enslaved blacksmith during the ownership period of James Madison, Sr. Moses ran the Blacksmith Shop during the American Revolution and even provided supplies for the Continental Army during the War. We are investigating this site to find evidence for the location of the forge, to confirm the types of items produced, and to clarify the structures that were present at the site. The site is adjacent to James Madison Jr.’s iconic 1810s-era Temple in the foreground of the Montpelier main house. Moses’s Blacksmith Shop was eventually moved during the 1810s reconfiguration of the main house formal grounds, potentially to build the Temple itself. During the Fall of 2025 we surveyed the area of Moses’ 18th century Blacksmith Shop and opened initial exploratory units. During the 2026 season we will do more extensive excavation of Moses’ shop as we seek to better understand the expertise and contributions of Moses and the other highly skilled craftsmen that worked in the shop. For the long-term goals of this project, see the following StoryMap on Blacksmithing at Montpelier.
