Smokehouse East

We excavated 5 ½ units across the Smokehouse. The light-blue line is where the 1837 insurance map shows the structure. The yellow line is our current hypothesis for its actual location. The feature highlighted in red is a rubble-filled pit that may be the former location of a corner-footer. The green feature is a small post hole. The purple area is a concentration of ash and charred wood, possibly evidence of a centralized smoke-pit. The dark-blue line is a feature that may be a builders’ trench indicating the location of the smokehouse walls. To answer your question, no, the trench wasn’t noted in the unit supposedly over the east wall. You know how these things go; it’s all quite preliminary. Click on the image again to enlarge.
