Illustrated overhead of the Duplex excavations

An illustrated overhead of the South Yard site showing the various features described in this post. The paling fence is represented as the series of close white lines (giving an impression of how it might have appeared in the landscape) that extends over the entire site and ends at the bottom right. To the north, the spaced white lines indicate the position of the Madison formal fence line. As can be seen, the brick rubble extends up to the post fence line and is scattered to the north (top) and south (bottom) of the paling fence.

To the north of the fence line, the grey dashed rectangle represents the position of the “Structure 1″ duplex according to the 1924 redrawing of the 1837 fire insurance plat. As you can see, the footprint of this structure would have extended over both the post fence line to the south and the brick path to the north (red line). The white rectangle surrounding the stone chimney base (center) represents the position of the duplex as determined through the archaeological excavations. Once again note that the brick path goes underneath the footprint of the duplex, which coupled with the fact that it ends on a line with the paling fence suggests that it was part of an earlier landscape before the construction of the duplexes. Similarly note that the duplex (white rectangle) is also symmetrical with the duplex discovered in 1990/91 (grey solid rectangle), whereas the insurance plat indicates that it was further to the south.

Finally, the blue area represents the location of the sheet midden behind the duplex (and out of sight of the mansion). While artifacts came from all over the duplex excavations, this area contained hundreds of artifacts, from ceramics, glass, nails, and the mouth harp.
